Running is one of the best cardio workouts you can get. However, it can also get repetitive and boring doing the same thing over and over. I watch runners morning and night, everyday (rain or shine) in White Rock B.C running the sidewalks and streets.  I decided to see where one group comes from, where are they going, (invariably back at the beginning) and look into the social as well as the basics of running.  I located the first runners group doing a morning warm-up and getting ready to leave from Peninsula Runners in White Rock, BC.

Running is a great way to get fit, feel better and even form new relationships with other runners. Starting a new running habit doesn’t have to be hard — all it takes is a comfortable pair of shoes and a willingness to move a little or a lot, all at your own pace. Whether you're an experienced runner, new to running, or looking for a reason to start, these tips can get you up and on your feet.

Hold off on buying all those expensive accessories like GPS watches, technical apparel, and fitness trackers until you're totally obsessed with running. For the moment, all you really need is a good pair of sneakers: ones that fit your feet and your stride. "Generally, shoes in the $90–$149 range are just fine". Think of your immediate goals and figure out what you might want, then go to a specialty running store to get fit for the right pair. Here you may ask and gain excellent advice from trained staff and marathon runners in moving towards your goal.

Run WITHOUT Gadgets

Many of us run with some form of technology strapped to our wrist, or plugged into our ear's. Surprising as it sounds, going for a run without anything on frees you up to focus on your body and the task at hand. With continual feedback from trackers, it will stress you out as your mind is focused on the data. Peninsula Runner's  staff explain ed to me that taking a tech time out can free the mind and let you focus on the pure joy of running.

Checking your pace, distance, and heart rate every few minutes means you're hung up more on numbers than on your body's physical cues. You may find your ignoring the feedback your body is sending, and diminishing one of the best benefits of running: mental peace. "Wearing technology while running intrudes on the mind's attempt to give itself over to the body," says Ben Agger, Ph.D., director of the University of Texas at Arlington Center for Theory and author of Body Problems: Running and Living Long in a Fast-Food Society.

If you're just beginning to walk or run, It is suggested to avoid GPS and other fitness tracking gadgets altogether. Don't let time comparison's interfere with your personal resolve. It can be hard to get over the beginner's hump, but it's best to prevent anything that would stop you dead in your tracks. Earphones are distracting and dangerous, but if you're jogging with a partner, it's a good time to strike up a conversation (and maybe even do a little motivational trash talk). Let's be social about it.

Take Your Routes Up A Notch or Go Trail Running

A lot of runners get tired of running the same route every day. Switch up your program and go where you haven't run before. You might find a great path or even discover some cool places nearby that you normally miss driving. A really good route is more important that you think. It keeps your exercise interesting, fun, and gets you outside, which we know is beneficial. In my experience, it makes or breaks whether or not I enjoy running. Finding a new running route can be tough, and there are a lot of things to consider. Do you want to run up hills? Do you want to avoid busy streets? If you need some help, ask store staff for advice.

The Perfect Running Route

What you're looking for in a running route is really about personal preference. Some people prefer running on trails, others prefer pavement. Penisula Runners Route PlanningSo, first things first: decide what you want in a running route. If you're just starting out, you're probably best with very few inclines or elevation changes. If you prefer trails to pavement, you'll probably need to look for options in public parks or outside of a city. Sometimes it might even be advisable to drive, walk or cycle your proposed route. Take note of Km's and turns so that you can mark it on a map later.

Compete With Your Friends or Family

Competition is a great way to get motivated, so find someone to go running with. It's best if you can run along side them, but if you're only option is a digital friend, that works too. Just don't get carried away with virtual friends.  A little challenge or competition is healthy and you can also set up one on one races for motivation. One excellent way is to get active with a local running group or form one of your your own in Soitsfun's free community. Peninsula Runners hosts regular groups and informational seminars in anticipation of upcoming marathons.

Set Solid Goals that Are Realistic

Vague, undefined goals are harder to accomplish. So set yourself a running goal that has a clearly defined time and finish line. It doesn't have to be a full marathon, but any kind of local organised running event is ideal.

Use Your Imagination

Create a reason in your head for why you're running - Soitsfun!  Nobody has to know about it, but you. Let your imagination run wild. Imagine you're training for the Boston Marathon, or convince yourself that you're just practicing zumba rule number one: cardio. After all, you're not going to last long if you can't escape the undead's grasp. Is it a bit silly? Sure, but just because you're an adult, that doesn't mean you can't come up with adventurous reasons to run. If your imagination needs a little help, there are apps out there that should set your mind up for some physical fun as you play out the fantasy. Remember rule number one: Don't let the earphones interfere with safety.

Change Up Your Goals During Your Runs

Changing your goals for individual runs can change how you run, making the same old thing feel like something different. It can be heart rate if you are looking at time or if it is distance then start looking at speed. Changing your goals for individual runs can change how you run, making the same old thing feel like something different.

Running is fun! Running with a group is infectious. running for exercise is one thing, running for fun is totally different. Running's modern definition has become synonymous with exercise and that strips it of joy. It's important to find joy in your the act of running and to strive for happiness. Because after all isn't that what it's all about? It is about your new goals, and new running buddies.
